우리는 그 어느 때보다 많은 것을 보고, 듣고, 기록하며 살아간다. 모든 것이 교환 가능하고 복제 가능하며, 소비 가능한 정보가 되어가는 시대다. 이미지는 경험을 대신하고, 정보는 기억을 대신하며, 속도는 시간을 대신한다. 더 많은 것을 알게 되었지만 세계를 깊이 경험하는 일은 오히려 어려워졌다. 《IT'S REAL》은 그 잃어버린 감각들을 다시 일깨우는 전시다.

길종갑과 김종숙은 오랫동안 자신이 살아온 곳을 기반으로 작업해왔다. 화천과 속초. 서로 다른 장소지만 두 작가에게 그곳은 단순한 고향이나 작업의 배경이 아니다. 삶의 터전이며, 오랜 시간 관계를 맺어온 세계 그 자체다. 이번 전시에서 그들은 대체 불가능한 것들에 관한 이야기를 들려준다. 화천의 흙냄새와 속초의 바닷바람, 오래 알고 지낸 사람들, 반복되는 계절, 손의 노동, 그 속에 형성된 감각들. 그것들은 복제될 수도, 다운로드 될 수도 없다.

작가는 계절이 바뀌고 꽃이 피고 지는 것을 지켜보며, 태어남과 죽음이 반복되는 시간을 몸으로 겪는다. 생명은 끊임없이 피어나지만 동시에 사라진다. 그래서 이들의 작품에는 죽음 역시 삶의 일부이며 자연스러운 질서로 존재한다. 피어나는 꽃 속에도, 오래된 나무의 몸통에도, 바다를 건너는 바람에도, 사람들의 얼굴에도 시간이 남긴 흔적과 생명의 순환이 스며 있다.

오늘날 우리는 죽음을 삶의 바깥으로 밀어내고, 늙음과 쇠퇴를 감추며, 영원히 지속되는 현재를 꿈꾼다. 그러나 두 작가의 세상 속에는 삶과 죽음, 생성과 소멸, 기쁨과 상실이 서로 분리되지 않는다. 모든 존재는 변화하고 사라지지만, 동시에 다른 생명으로 이어지며 세계를 이루고 있다.

 《IT'S REAL》의 ‘진짜’(REAL)는 어떤 객관적 사실을 의미하는 것이 아니다. 그것은 삶과 세계가 직접 맞닿아 있는 상태, 사람과 자연이 서로를 비추며 존재하는 상태, 그리고 시간을 들여 비로소 드러나는 세계의 본성에 관한 이야기이다. 어쩌면 진짜 세계는 멀리 있는 것이 아니라 우리가 서 있는 자리, 우리가 살아가는 풍경, 그리고 오랜 시간 관계를 맺어온 존재들 속에 이미 있었는지도 모른다. 《IT'S REAL》은 그 세계를 다시 발견하는 시간이다.

We live in an age where we see, hear, and record more than ever before. Everything is becoming exchangeable, reproducible, and consumable as information. Images replace experience, information replaces memory, and speed replaces time. While we have more knowledge, it has become increasingly difficult to experience the world deeply. IT’S REAL reawakens those lost senses.

Gil Jong-gap and Kim Jong-sook have long grounded their work in the places where they have lived. Hwacheon and Sokcho—different places, yet for both artists these places are more than hometowns or settings for their work. They are the foundations of their lives, worlds with which they have formed relationships over a long period of time. In this exhibition, the artists tell stories about things that cannot be replaced: the scent of soil in Hwacheon, the sea breeze of Sokcho, people they have known for a long time, the recurring seasons, manual labor, and the sensibilities formed through these experiences. Such things cannot be replicated or downloaded.

The artists witness the changing of seasons and the blooming and fading of flowers, experiencing through their own bodies the passage of time in which birth and death are repeated. Life continuously emerges, yet it also disappears. For this reason, death appears in their work as a part of life and as a natural order. In blooming flowers, old tree trunks, winds crossing the sea, and the faces of people, traces of time and the cycles of life are embedded.

Today, we push death outside the boundaries of life, concealing aging and decline, and dreaming of an eternal present. Yet within the worlds of these two artists, life and death, creation and extinction, joy and loss are never separated. All beings change and disappear, yet they continue through other forms of life and make up the world.

The “real” in IT’S REAL does not refer to an objective fact. Rather, it speaks of a state in which life and the world are in direct contact; a state in which people and nature reflect one another; and the nature of the world revealed only through time. Perhaps the real world is not somewhere far away. Perhaps it has always existed in the place where we stand, in the landscapes we inhabit, and in the beings with whom we have formed relationships over a long period of time. IT’S REAL is a time to rediscover that world.
